I spent my two precious movie nights this week on The Beast Must Die, in which the world’s worst hunter hunts the world’s worst werewolf, and The Amazing Transparent Man, in which ...??? While staring blankly at the screen during The Amazing Transparent Man, one of the many arbitrary thoughts that crossed my mind

Ready or Not. I loved this movie. Funny, suspenseful, gory, and satirical. Weaving as a very sympathetic, very human “player” gives some surprisingly hilarious line readings. But, really, the entire cast is terrific.

So I finished Mindhunter Season 2 and I loved it. I loved how they minimised the “interview a serial killer” aspect of the first Season in favour of something that still affects people in the modern day. The Atlanta Child Murders still grips the city till this day for a reason and the show went out of its way to

Reading this was impossible--the movies and their titles are so similar I constantly forgot which was which. Not Caroline’s fault AT ALL, but all I know at the end of it is that the Kunis/Timberlake one is better even if I don’t know what the title is.

Here’s some pop culture news! The Korean Marines have selected an official song, composed by recently released draftee Chanhyuk, half of the brother-sister k-pop dou AKMU. The title to the song is “Only victory will brightly illumimate us”. I’ve been unable to find the song on the net but its probably a better song

That is exactly the kind of stupid awesome I’d hoped for!

I saw What Is It when Glover came through my town some years back. It’s the kind of movie I’m glad I saw but would run away screaming if I had to watch it again. (Pro tip if you’re going to see it: Look up the characters on IMDb first).

Oh, and apparently it’s a TV series now, too, because of course it is. Everything is.

Yeah, I watched it a bunch when I was young, too. McDowell plays the ‘man out of time’ bit perfectly well. Just his amazement at damn near everything is really well done. I love when he has to sleep in the park on his first night, and as he’s tying his scarf around his head, he says, ‘Utopia’. Perfect summarization of

Saving Mr. Banks.

I suspect that when the wheels finally fall off (pun intended), the series will move to Netflix in a “story mode”... “in this scene, will Vin Diesel be Fast? or Furious? you decide!”

I saw Once Upon A Time In Hollywood yesterday. I thought it was too long, boring in places, and I have no clue whether or not Bruce Lee was arrogant, but I didn’t like seeing Bruce Lee getting beaten up by some white guy. I thought Margot Robbie’s parts were so incidental it was like a Robert Altman flick.

Hobbs & Shaw. I was hoping for dumb musclebound fun and it provides, strangely unsatisfactory though. I like the actors involved and love the idea of Idris “Black Superman” Elba’s character, just the execution lacking. For a movie with so much mass (mostly courtesy of Dwyane Johnson biceps) the action was weightless, s

Oh my god I can’t believe I posted my PCW on What’s On Tonight. So I’ll repost them here:

Eldest s0n (36) and I will be heading to the CINEMA to see My Neighbor Totoro. Currently listening to my mix of preferred Peter Gabriel tracks (61 tracks, runs over 5 hours). Will finish reading James Ellroy’s Suicide Hill.

Good week/weekend for movies! Let’s go.

Most of the old commenters on these threads left with the arrival of Kinja, and the place I’d left for was a pop culture Disqus channel mirroring some of the old threads here. But now two years later Disqus is ending channels, so the people behind that have set up a blogspot site with Disqus comments. And rather than

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. It’s a solid little horror movie. Nicely shot, likable cast, a couple of memorable sequences (that first scarecrow sequence was a little more intense than I was expecting, actually). The sequel set-up in the last scene is irritating.

I’m irritating everyone around me with my apocalyptic visions of the approaching cold. “It’s still August,” they say. “There’s another month of summer,” they say. “Just get a pair of electric socks,” they say.
