I just was saying that myself a few posts down.
Yeah, I pretty much thought the same thing as soon as I saw the Dr. I'm going to have to go back and see what they said in ep. 1 now.
Well the show got a whole lot better this time, saved it for me. Surprisingly Rufus was the main draw in this one. See how much better it is when they give "Rufus something to do besides stand outside buildings and deal with racists".
I hope the show keeps getting better like this and not take a step back to those…
It's a good thing Dr. Leekie's parents didn't take him on a trip to Vegas then!
The estimates for US fatalities in Operation Downfall was anywhere from 300K to a million. And that's, like you say, taking into account that the US didn't want to extinguish everyone on the island and Japan would have surrendered before fighting to the last man.
Another interesting fact is that it was said that the US…
Yeah, if you look at the numbers of Operation Downfall, the US, Britain, and Australia could only muster a 6 million man invasion force in their planned timetable. You could pretty much guess what was going to happen when you consider what happened with the island hopping, especially Okinawa.
My point was that although most cities have military value, some are clearly more vital to the war effort than others.
Most of this arguement isn't about choice of targets though. It's about whether it should have happened at all.
You have to remember that leaders back then were a lot more callous when it came to…
That is a valid point. Problem is blockades like that hurt the civilians more than the military. The military would have taken from the people to keep going. Just look at what happened in Okinawa. Plus a breather would have allowed them to rearm and regroup to some extent. The US would have had to keep bombing to…
Operation Downfall, the invasion of Japan was going to happen if the US had not dropped the bombs and the Russians declaring war only hastend those plans. If you think otherwise I've got some beachfront property in Arizona to sell you.
It's laughable to think the Japanese would have surrendered instanly just because…
So smarty pants how do you suggest the US end the war with Japan in WWII? With hugs and a handshake? (And no, leave them be is not an option) There were a combined 35 million Japanese soldiers and civilian conscripts that were going to fight for every square inch of homeland. You think they were just going to lay down…
Ok, I guess you would have preferred 5-10 million Japanese fatalities instead?
Exactly! Take that even further, how would the team back home even know that they sent them in the first place if the timeline changes significantly? Maybe in a future episode the lab doesn't even know who the three people in the capsule are. Or even the capsule comes back to an empty warehouse. All kinds of things…
Feels like every episode so far has been #4. Just wait until episode 3 in 1962! Episode 4 is probably the closest we get to #6, I doubt they'll do more than one episode on WWII.
I don't think they'll do a "future" episode other than maybe where Flynn originated (pretty sure it was the future). The closest they may get…
So next episode we are going to 1962. Should be a doozy for all the injustices Rufus finds and lets us know about.
