It's one of the reasons Aaron Sorkin's STUDIO 60 felt off the mark. He thought the drama was the show against the network and the writers and cast members in a united front against conservative censors when the real conflict in SNL was internal between cast members competing to get more airtime.

David Spade said he wrote it so all his buddies on the show could do a sketch together but the other women in the cast hated it because all the female characters were played by guys.

The Charlton Heston episode that season was great. The whole opening parodying PLANET OF THE APES was fantastic.
I remember that season as having a lot of monologues where audience members would stand up and ask questions from the host.
