If rich famous people who get free publicity all the time can’t make their business work, how am I supposed to have any faith in capitalism?

To me it feels like when Rachel is like “Ross, you don’t bring a picnic to someone’s JOB!” and he’s like “ohhhhhhhhhhh, so I wanted to spend time with my girlfriend on her anniversary, what a bad boyfriend am I!”
REVOLTING
I grew up in the Midwest but recently relocated to Idaho, where there are Mormons everywhere, so I read it thinking “oh, let me see what these people are all about.” Of course, the majority of Mormons aren’t creepy fundamentalist sect kind, but even hearing about the origins of the religion and some of their beliefs…
I haven’t had anything horrific like an acid attack happen to me, but it feels very familiar, I think because of what you’re saying. Men who throw acid in women’s faces must truly want to ruin their lives, take away their identities, prevent them from experiencing other relationships or intimacy, and all kinds of…
Ugh. Definitely. That’s more or less what I meant by “convince,” although your wording is much more accurate. Have you read “Under the Banner of Heaven”? Someone recommend it on a different Jez thread about these guys a while ago. Mormon polygamists are villainously predatory.
That’s it!!!!
“Good luck finding anyone then”
Yeah, it’s an abusive practice whatever the legalities are. Someone downthread said something that was a lightbulb for me. This way they can go after crimes where the victim of abuse doesn’t see herself as a victim of abuse. Either you get married off to an old man at fourteen and you hate it and try to escape, or you…
Probably... the breakup narrative is so easy to believe, though! How could those women NOT all be fed up with Cody and his shit?!
Ahh, thanks! That made it click for me. I’d forgotten about the “victims don’t think they’re victims” aspect.
Yeah, I’m just over here wondering how this story about fighting together for legislative change gels with the cover story from the new Life & Style?!
I don’t get it either. Underage marriage and sexual abuse are illegal so we have to make this other thing illegal becauae how could we be expected to keep an eye on the illegal shit unless it were illegal AND illegal! Uh what?
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Interesting read, thanks.
Right. Even if the hypothetical law would allow for more than two people of any gender in a marriage, the people fighting for it do not believe in multiple husbands. I definitely don’t agree with legalizing polygamy the way it is currently practiced.
We’re both kinda procrastinatey about that. The problem is that his version of “I cleaned up the kitchen!” and my version of “I cleaned up the kitchen!” are not the same...
If that were a movie test audiences would be like “Nah we don’t believe her parents would be so shitty to her.”
Ha, oh weird, thanks, I wonder why I read it like that?! Makes for some nice political jousting imagery? I was imagining a bunch of White Knight Syndrome bros just embracing their clichés?
I saw Colbert explaining that history the other day. I’ve always thought we should just eliminate that part of sporting events entirely, but if it gets eliminated now, it’s just going to look like the NFL putting a gag on one of the ways players can use their visibility to start meaningful conversations about things…
