Agree with you the seatbelt claim seems troubling. Not sure you can jump to “using inefrior metal” because it didn’t use the same materials from a Honda Civic. It’s a car designed for racing, not driving home back and forth from college.

To be honest though, what were the VW buyers thinking? Getting into a car with that much low end torque and high gas milage. The VW wasn’t even sporting a urea injection system. If you get into a car looking like that, you are kind of asking for it. I’m not trying to blame the victim, but you really need to use better…

Here is a question I have. Wouldn’t those sensors also tell the car to go into “clean” mode when they are doing dyno testing for performance figures (HP/torque/MPG)? Are the EPA tests so specific that the sensors could differentiate between that and a performance test?

I don’t know if caring about cars makes this seem like a bigger deal to me than the general public, but I could legitimately see this dooming VW in America. At least any diesel cars. Maybe they can rebrand themselves MenschAuto or something.

Also they are rare everywhere based on total annual sales. And I’d expect convertibles to sell better in climates where the top can be down all year.
