SF fandom has had this type of fund for Fans for, most notably the TAFF, the Trans Atlantic Fan Fund (England/Europe <->North America), DUFF, the Down Under Fan Fund between North America and Australia & New Zealand and finally CUFF, the Canadian Unity Fan Fund between east and west Canada.

I've already heard from scientist friends of mine that they are expecting that Science will be cut deeply by the Teabaggers and the Neo-Cons. Too many of these people believe that the "End Times" are near, and thus why spend money on the future?
