It’s being “blasted by critics” and you link to two articles that are affiliated with this site specifically? That’s kind of dull and not really interesting. “Blasted by critics” is a phrase that needs some more support than “my co-workers didn’t like it.”

It has less to do with marketing than what the audience likes. Americans have become more and more picky about the franchise movies they watch, while foreigners seem to support pretty much anything with explosions and a big brand name.

In other words, you’re the problem! I haven’t been to see any Michael Bay movie in the cinema, ever. Although I did go to see all three Hobbit movies, so not entirely blameless!

The reason we keep getting mindless summer blockbusters is because you (and everyone else) keep going to every single one. If you want better movies, you need to stop supporting bad ones. Hollywood will do whatever we pay them to do.
