My sense is that no more than a couple hundred thousand of our fellow citizens would break toward Nazism if push came to shove. That's defeatable.

It can get much worse. Nazi Germany set the bar for 'how bad can a formal democracy really get?' That said, Germany got that bad because millions of people decided to make it that bad or did nothing to stop it.
