You are right, cooking is exactly what kills the bacteria in chicken. I guess some old wives tails persist though. People are *fanatical* that they need to wash it.

Yes, people believe they are washing the bacteria off chicken prior to cooking it. But really they are just spreading bacteria into their sink.

I think the problem is that feral cats will wreck the rest of the ecosystem, as you can’t train them to target only rats. It’s a huge issue in Hawaii right now. Granted, Hawaii is a lot different than NYC as far as predators and risks for cats.
