Not that you have to divulge but I am thinking you are in/from the south? I am and we grew up doing that here. When I mention it to people from the north they think is insane. Also most people I know did it with Mountain Dew but come drank Coke/Pepsi/RC as well.

The Serious Eats one is actually pretty good; the oils in the skin from the muddling are much more concentrated lime flavour than just juice. YMMV, of course.

Incidentally, today I turned a Godfather (with two parts blended Scotch and one part Amaretto, as God intended) into a long drink by adding Coke and ice (as God never intended) because I needed the caffeine, and it was super great. I highly recommend it.

I assume this is one of those things where they came up with the name and worked backwards from there.
Why? Soda actually is a decent random ingredient. Dr Pepper sauced pulled pork, Cola wings, frozen alcoholic rootbeer floats, I mean- I’m not gonna give away all my best ideas but if they’re in need; just know Avclub, I’m your coke guy ;)
