That is what PC players still do.  Thats literally all CheatEngine is, a hex editor with a decent interface.

The 2.4 in the Equinox has the same inherent issue as the Ecoboost: the timing-chain driven water pump. Now, neither engine is garbage due to this, just maintain them properly…

Why?  This can be true depending on the vehicle.  Choking airflow was a common method of gimping engine output at least in the 80s and early 90s, so simply freeing up the flow a bit was good for pretty decent gains.  Hot or not, more air is more better.
