I highly doubt the diesel would get 50% better economy. Not saying it isn't possible, just highly unlikely in my mind. Ecoboosts do pretty darn well by truck standards.
This was a very well-written and informative article, once I got past the unneeded low-blow against Republicans in the first paragraph. "Cheap" and "fun" are exclusive ideas of many car companies. Especially non-American ones. At least the Big 3 have pony cars, which aren't terrible on the fun:price ratio. The Japanese brands, however, have just about lost their minds, outside of the Toyobaru BRZ/FR-S.
Not sure where y'all are driving, but luckily in Texas many roads are on the up-swing, and new projects abound, even in sparsely populated West Texas.
