I’d watch it.
I’d watch it.
She’s said something akin to “I speak through my work” when asked about Scientology in interviews. Most of her work is about the evils of the patriarchy. The Handmaid’s Tale is specifically about the evils of a religious patriarchy. That’s about as close as she can come to saying “Scientology is bad” without being cut…
There may be more context in the actual interview. The wording of the quote pulled here comes across as super obnoxious, but she isn’t wrong (and she isn’t claiming she started the metoo movement either... at least not here. That is a wild stretch). She was talking about those things before it was acceptable to do so.…
But how many franchise movies came out in the years with those movies? Annihilation was 2018. There have been nine Marvel films since.
The audience for those movies has been pushed to TV. Mid-budget adult dramas have been pushed out of theaters to make room for Marvel films and other retreads, bit by bit, for the last 15-20 years.
No one goes around claiming “all Halloween movies are different” or saying “Halloween movies deserve Oscars.” Marvel fans do claim these things.
I don’t have a specific issue with Marvel films (besides them being bland and uninteresting), but I do have an issue with Disney taking over the large and small screen.
They are all action movies.
They really don’t. They all taste like chips with flavorings made in a lab.
I don’t want to watch The Godfather again either, but I’d much rather watch a new movie, with an actual point of view, than watch another Marvel film. They *are* all the same.
I love Spider-man as much as the next girl (if not more) but the one movie every two years is plenty.
But those films were made by directors with a long track record. Noah Baumbach’s first film came out in 1995. If they were new filmmakers, starting today, they would not find funding.
SVU & CI, yes, but original L&O has some great “current” episodes. The post 9-11 season is amazing. There are quite a few bangers in that one. Of course there are clunkers too, especially when anyone “discusses” a social issue, but the peak seasons of L&O (the Orbach seasons, basically) hit more than they miss.
My dad & I always say “Jack would give his own Grandmother the chair.” The show often paints Jack as excessively out for vengeance. Or lacking an idea of what real justice is.
Exactly, thank you! Law and Order has always show the ugly side of the justice system. Maybe it’s not ugly enough, but it’s absolutely not the Republican propaganda people suggest it is.
Midge has good qualities and bad qualities. Why do we have to deem a female character terrible every time she has substantial flaws? Most people have substantial flaws.
Gilmore Girls has plenty of issues but the Gilmore girls themselves are well drawn and the relationships between them are nuanced. The show doesn’t really get enough credit for that IMO.
She’s 55 with a long, successful former career, and it appears to be a summer internship (she’s still finishing her coursework). I don’t think it will be a big issue, but it’s honestly sorta pointless to discuss because the school and work stuff on AJLT has all taken place in fantasy land.
Yes it did. She didn’t enjoy the honeymoon because she was bored. She wanted a more active vacation. Steve wanted a more quiet vacation. Everyone has different travel styles (my dad is go-go-go, which is too much for me, but I don’t like to laze on the beach either. I like a moderate amount of activity) but, once…
Must we call everything toxic all the time?
I really enjoyed Physical. It’s a shame it didn’t get more attention, but it is a hard watch. It’s absolutely the best depiction of eating disordered behavior I’ve seen on film, which is why it got the attention it did, but also why it’s a hard watch.
Physical takes place in San Diego. Those are San Diego County politics.
San Diego county starts pretty far north.
