If you want a good deal on a late model (3-5 years old) used car, find a trade-in at a dealership that is a competitive brand (i.e. a Benz at a BMW dealership, a Lexus at an Acura, etc). They don’t want a competitor brand on the lot encouraging their customers to comparison shop, so they will be sending it to auction…

I am a wholesale dealer. My late model, low mileage cars CONSTANTLY get sold to CarMax through Manheim auctions. I can tell you for a fact, their inventory is no different than any other used car dealer. They get them same way all of us do - at used car auctions. CarMax details them, changes tires and calls its a day.
