But this exaggeration of the extent of the relationship would have had to have happened LONG before he claims to have realized it was fake. He was describing a serious relationship many months ago, but claims to have only found out it was a hoax in December, and only realized Lennay was fake this past week. So what

Hmm, that last theory sounds reasonable. If the hoax was as extensive as Te'o keeps making it sound like, there have to be other people involved. I supposed they could try to pay them all off, but I'd bet someone talks.... But if he was just exaggerating the extent of his involvement with Lennay, then, well, maybe

So, I'm in a bit of a muddle. What's the going theory for why? Clearly this wasn't about the Heisman, at least, all this back story wasn't created for a Heisman bid. It seems pretty likely that he tried to capitalize on it for the PR benefit, but...even that's a little unclear, at least to me.

[chuckle] Nice.

I don't think it's as dire as that...some wouldn't learn what they are supposed to anyway, and some would regardless. I think the more reasonable course of action for those concerns is to keep a closer eye on her classes, do some early reviews of the grades that people are getting on homework and tests. And,

Or another (hey, it could be a barn owl!)

Or an actual farm animal

I know, not a farm animal, but....

So very well put. I was wondering if MattPa realizes what site he is on. Wringing your hands about the snark on a Gawker site is...well, like having a sad because your fake girlfriend can't call you any more.

Sober people + darts will still eventually = bounce outs Maybe it's an electronic soft tip board....?

Let her prove herself. If she's an ineffective teacher, surely the evaluations they have in place to find and fire ineffective teachers would suffice. If they don't, well, that means she's being effective in spite of something which could be a distraction. That's bad...how? There's no doubt that it could make her

Huh? Longer than who? From the linked article: "On average, healthy people lived 84 years. Smokers lived about 77 years and obese people lived about 80 years."

There's another way to look at this. There are other countries which consume more violent video games than in the USA. How do the violent crime rates in the target demographic compare? (spoiler: Japan is one of them, and the crime rate isn't even in the same ballpark)

I do hope that in the rush to fast-track this that the government works to make sure things are done to the letter. It should be an opportunity to reform and do things right, not to skip proper due process. I worry that if it's the latter, that while it might lead to short term justice, it would do longer term

Now playing

Which just goes to show that nothing ever changes (also, watch the full movie some time, worthwhile)

Well, while everything you say is valid, I doubt it would seem particularly persuasive to someone who agrees with Mendive. I'm pretty sure they'd just as soon criminalize abortion, making everything else moot (to them). And, frankly, some of the same arguments used to support abortion are used to push for

Which is hella annoying. C'mon science, you can make moisturizing, thinning pants, but where's my antiperspirant shirt that saves me subsidizing Gillette?

Laura, it would be worth pointing out that smokers and the obese save money in the long run. On average, they die earlier. Chronic conditions over time are what cost the most money, and people with unhealthy lifestyles don't live long enough to rack up as high a bill:

Actually, obesity and smoking save healthcare money. It's true. Chronic conditions over time are what cost the most money, and people with unhealthy lifestyles don't live long enough to rack up as high a bill: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/05/health/05iht-obese.1.9748884.html
