Harsh control of followers is not the defining characteristic of a cult - the medieval Christian church enforced churchgoing and persecuted heretics and apostates, but being universal across Europe I don't think anyone would term it a "cult". Same with Islam. The difference is purely one of socially perceived

I agree with Bluemoon - ST2 was dumped on for not being a mega-action epic like the first film, but it's actually a cool little horror film that happens to be set in the ST universe. Then they made ST3 to placate the fanboys, and it was a turd.
