Ah, I stand corrected then. At least the change happened early in production so they could account for it before it was animated, and they didn’t have to go hacking things up after-the-fact.
It was produced as an open matte. Every shot was framed around the theatrical widescreen aspect ratio, but the rest of the 4:3 frame above and below that was drawn and animated so the home video release could get the full intended shot without resorting to black bars or zooming in with pan-and-scan.
