I think Judity is the answer. They raise the stakes. It makes Andrew Lincoln sick. The character is dead in the comics. They get a major death without sacrificing an actual character.

I’ve said it before, but if they want to make Negan truly evil, there’s one death that they can do, and it’s already happened in the comics too (just at a different time). But it’s one TWD can’t come back from, and I don’t know if they’d be willing to go that far.
