Americais not such a free country as it seems. Laying on back is a must in most hospitals. It’s terrible. Mamas need to do what their body tells them just like any other day in life. Birth can be beautiful and messed up if you don’t know the person who delivers your baby.

All of this is horrible and sounds like an awful labour dystopia. I had a pretty horrible birth, but I’m glad I had it in my country because...jeez Louise, ALL OF THAT.

It’s a hold over from olden times when women got strapped down for labor. It’s ridiculous, uncomfortable and awful. My first daughter was born with me on my back and I will never do that again. I wish more US hospitals embraced the well know fact that squatting and hands and knees is better for labor and helps women

I didn’t miss the point at all. I understand perfectly that mistakes can happen and sometimes they’re not a doctor’s fault, or anyone’s fault. I also didn’t miss the point that doctors and nurses are human. And I haven’t missed any of your repeated points about how annoying the patients are. Like when they’re trying

There’s so many reasons but it mostly comes down to doctor’s schedules, medical insurance coverage/payouts for hospital stays and malpractice insurance. OBs want to control the birth situation 100% to avoid getting sued. There are unofficial time limits imposed on laboring in a hospital. It’s considered wasting time

Jeez, maybe you really are a doctor. You managed to be very knowledgeable yet give a hypothetical where it’s the nurse’s fault and the doctor is a hero for reporting what they’re legally obligated to. (Sorry, had to bust your balls, my aunt is a nurse ;P

Thank you for this info! I’m side eyeing the hell out of the commenter claiming to be a doctor who didn’t seem to know that she won her judgement precisely because many other doctors saw the blatant malpractice in this case. That’s a huge amount to win(not enough IMO for her lifelong pain and suffering) and they

I work for a medical malpractice law firm and YES - we have MULTIPLE expert MD’s, RN’s, etc. for our cases. We have a doctor on staff who reviews cases to let us know if we should even look into a case. Also, 3 of our lawyers are former RN’s.

There’s always someone who worries more about the bad guys. I wouldn’t want that guy to be my doctor, ever.

Did you even RTFA, Doctor? What happened here was none of the nonsense you wrote above. Plus, she won a settlement based on evidence, so why don’t you go recertify yourself. “Peeps do weird stuff all the time” is not something any MD should EVER say.

She yelled at the nurses to stop and they didn’t. I think that alone kinda renders Doctah’s point moot.

Exactly. Additionally, women are often ignored by doctors when they report things that seem unusual about their own bodies. I recently switched gynos for that reason, she didn’t listen to me when I reported certain symptoms and it was only a month later that she finally admitted I’d been right because lo and behold,

wrong, wrong, wrong. This is the stage when the baby is most at-risk for oxygen deprivation because they start gasping for air.

yes. ThisGuy is wrong.

My doctor didn’t even ask if I wanted an episotomy. Just did it. It upsets me a lot when I really think about it but for the most part I’ve just decided I need to be more vocal the next time I give birth.

My doctor told me that she might gently hold the baby’s head as it was crowning and tell me not to push for a moment. If she did that, and I followed her instructions, I would likely not tear. She seemed pretty proud of her no tearing and no episiotomy record. She would not have actually PUSHED the baby back in,

I literally gasped out loud when I read the headline, and everyone in my open office looked at me.

they didn’t need to do anything. they made a weird, fucked up choice while the mother was telling them to stop. i can’t even guess what was going through these nurses’s minds. Like, what the actual fuck do you think you’re doing. You can’t reverse birth, wtf.

to “wait for the doctor” i think? this was ridiculously awful malpractice. I’m glad it seems like the baby didn’t suffer any permanent damage...holy fuck...the top of the head is THE SPOT YOU’RE NEVER SUPPOSED TO TOUCH!! LET ALONE SHOVE BACK IN!!

OMG!! As a pregnant lady this just scares the shit out of me!
