The only reason Americans aren’t as “well” armed as Cartels is because full auto/select fire guns and full auto sears are restricted by the ATF and require an NFA stamp, which is difficult to obtain.

But what you’re failing to see is that by applying it to people seeking asylum, it is a new law. Not a modified version of the existing law.
It wasn’t law to separate kids from their parents at the border. That’s a capricious and recent add-on to the existing laws.
