Better cgi wouldn't have saved it. I have no idea why you think it's a "great story". It's cliche as fuck, boring as shit and gets in the way of the actual story the prequels are supposed to be telling. Obi-Wan being separated from Anakin for the majority of the movie is a huge fucking problem.

I watched Ep. 2 a week or two ago and the Coruscant chase does not hold up visually. Arena battle isn't that bad divorced from context. But shit like c3po's head on the battle droid, the entire factory sequence and jango's hilarious death really drag down that last chunk of the movie.
