George Lucas has always been the creator, but of the original three films he only directed the first one (episode IV). Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were directed by two others, but those directors still had to answer to George Lucas' vision. To a certain extent he told the directors what to do.

Thank you. This is what I'm always trying to say to people. I never quite understood what people mean when they say GT isn't canon. Of course it isn't canon to the manga, but it is canon to the DBZ anime. Manga and anime are too separate canon. The anime is a reinterpretation of the manga that Akira Toriyama created
