"Doing good" was never part of it. Distressingly high-inertia regulatory processes kept us with the standard round and rectangular sealed beams until sometime in the late 80s, I think. Virtually all of those regs are gone, now, and the cars sold in the US can have any crazy headlight shape and design as any other…
