Some of this advice is dependent on what you are writing and you should always bear in mind who the audience is and the publisher's house style. I heard a radio feature a couple of years ago saying that this was a particular problem in the US but was starting to affect Europe as well. Can anyone up date us all on the worldwide proliferation of this problem?
If you're considering cost then shouldn't you also consider the energy cost as well. I agree that if you want to simmer something for a long time on a very low heat then a fairly thick pan is worth it, but for heating things up (boiling veg, baked beans and soup) then the energy cost difference could easily be more…
Classic LifeHacker. You can make something you can buy at a DIY shop or car parts shop, using stuff that you're not going to have just lying around the home and will be harder to source than the thing you're trying to make anyway.
