Not a lot of people get to write three whole articles on how they’ve completely misunderstood the game and show. Congrats to this guy!

Oh I liked it quite a lot. It’s an excellent show and I’ve consumed a lot of the discourse and meta material around it so I’m clearly invested. I just wish it was a teeny bit better at handling the overarching narrative and character growth.

Failure is indeed too strong of a word. It just missed the mark slightly for me. I’ll retract the “failure” part of my statement.

Oh and I absolutely agree that it’s the best video game adaption - thus far. Just that I don’t think video game adaptations have been ironed out yet and this is a good example of that.

Absolutely worth it. That felt and looked real in a way cgi just can’t.

Agree to agree.

I agree with all of this. The show’s existence is validated by the Frank/Bill story alone.

I can’t be bothered re-reading my wall of text to see if I already mentioned it - but I believe they unconsciously rely too much on the audience already being familiar with the source material. Game players have already integrated the Joel/Ellie bond - and even moreso for the show (and game) creators. So I believe

Weird that I never once “declared it dead”. Put up another strawman my dude.

Outside of the US they have very lacklustre libraries of older shows.

Who gives a fuck with Netflix anymore? Either pirate or one month subscribe when their few worthy shows have fully dropped. Worst of the streamers by far.

(but fuck, how good does it look and sound though? And damn Pedro and Bella, all the emmy’s!)

I’m extremely ambivalent of this show. There’s so much talent behind it: Mazin, Pascal, Ramsey, every actor in roles big or small, Druckerman sure.

Counterpoint: I think they went overboard with showing the victims of Joel’s massacre as human and sad as possible. There were nothing to soften the blow here, and the music was to underscore the tragedy - not to make it melodramatic.

And you are still wrong. I’ve seen 1000s of movies, graduated from film school, written screenplays (some that made it into production), and it’s still the most heart-wrenching, original movie I have seen in my life. It literally changed my life - and many many others too.

Haha. I’m only up to 15th viewings (6 in the theatre) so far. Working on it

Or this guy getting a screenplay Oscar

I think the perennial example is Parks and Recs. It wasn’t necessarily bad per se, but the first season is very ehhhhh compared to everything that followed.

Love to say I told you so

I dunno. As an activist commie myself, I thought it was well done how they subverted the most obvious “both-siding” trope by making the protest a “false flag”. I thought they kept the nazis on just the right side of buffoons whilst also not making the statement that “Some people suck; but they’re still people.” ring
