It has everything to do with the writing! The writing affects the production schedule, and how long the season should be! Weiss and Beniot wrote this season as 6 episodes on purpose. GRRM even said that a lot of storylines aren’t shown, or shown too much because of the audience rating of certain characters.

The reason why everyone is so upset is not because of the decision Dany made, but WHY she did and HOW she got to that point. I don’t doubt the book will end similarly, but it will more clear why Dany decides to ransack King’s Landing and become the “Mad Queen”.
