If you read the NYT article, it’s mostly that there’s very little to the exhibit. It features very few of Picasso’s works, and the works it features are all pretty minor. Gadsby’s monologue on Picasso (which is part of the exhibit) makes repeated fun of cubism, but the exhibit only has one tiny piece of Picasso’s

Yeah, and it’s worth noting that the critic mentions it because, apparently, part of the exhibit is that section of Nanette running on loop. So it’s not like he’s gratuitously hating on the special, it’s part of what the Brooklyn Museum has put on display.

I don’t know that the context is really complete, and I’m not actually sure that the Brooklyn Museum is underfunded, even if it is under-attended. A lot of the museum’s social justice focus comes from the fact that, unlike a lot of the better-known museums in Manhattan, which are typically in affluent white

Is it really an example of irony?

Page has actually shared a different story about Ratner being a complete shit to him in essentially the opposite way: When they were filming X-Men: The Last Stand, Page was eighteen at the time and not yet out as either trans or liking women, but Ratner said to a woman on set with them, re: Page, “You should fuck her

Hm, I vividly remember Nanette being called out as a glorified TED talk a LOT. But I also remember critical voices being yelled down with shrill and histrionic replies like “you just can’t cope a smart female comedian”. 2018 was still very close to the metoo years

Boots Riley faced the same kind of criticism for distributing his upcoming tv show through Amazon.

impossible to ignore the fact that centering a movie on a “Gypsy curse” was a bad idea in 1996

I didn’t hate it, I just don’t know if you can call something a “comedy” show if the main purpose or intent of the substantive content isn’t to make people laugh. I won’t argue against people whossay she’s a skilled performer, masterfully juggles tension, or that she can be funny when she wants to be—I’m just saying

Someone addressing the entire ethical problem with Dr. Jacob dating Michelle in the first place”

WHO do people want to address this?

Is it Michelle’s ex-husband? Is it Michelle’s ex-husband’s best friend who hates her? Or is it someone else in the cast, ALL OF WHOM HAVE NEVER MET MICHELLE OR DR JACOB?

I would *love* to

Mine is a different superhero movie:  Batman Forever.  Not many albums have U2, Seal, Brandy, PJ Harvey, Method Man, AND Nick Cave on it.

score vs soundtrack though? there a ton of fantastic scores, but generally soundtracks are an entirely different category

Yes - plus “Thank God It’s Friday” and “Car Wash” - both great snapshots of 70s soul / disco

I actually remember that New Yorker profile.
Strange that At Last is hard for you to find--you must have an older collection than I do, as I have the single volume paperback that includes it (if that’s any help--)

Same! I read the collection of the first four novels just last week, though I’m finding At Last as hard to track down as you did the Mother’s Milk movie. I like both the show and the books. Starting with Bad News was the correct move; I almost stopped reading after I realized that I’d be getting a scene of paternal

Obligatory “For Sam Heughan, might be at least worth giving it a try.”

...And that is neolibs keep owning themselves!

Now playing

All I wanted from this movie is to be a feature-length version of Barbie Instagram (the #1 SNL skit, imo).

“Poor thing. She doesn’t know she’s a toy.”
