I’m glad someone said this in the comments. A lot of (but not all, of course) of card game etymology has Magic at its source, simply from how long ago the game started and how much it has influenced card game designers and players since then.

I haven’t played Odyssey and Valhalla, but I’ve played Origins, and you have a shield, which I don’t think the later ones have. Which means there is a blocking mechanic that was removed in favour of adding more combat moves. I think it’s still the same skeleton of combat.
