I dunno, I’m OK with the Knicks getting banned from the NBA for a year too.
In his (and owners’) defense, it’s possible to have a distaste for the style of play but understand the benefits they provide. But enough about James Harden.
its perfectly ok to acknowledge Serena Williams as a legend and pioneer for women and people of color, and also call her out for shitty childish behavior. theres no need for the rhetoric of “we could criticize her but we wont because then the racists win.” thats just lazy.
i love how even when ‘apologizing’ serena takes no responsibility for any of it. it’s masterful
You say “So, to keep it simple” and then you don’t keep it simple at all. Serena was not only a weird unhinged psycho that day but then her apology (which she thought was so good that she chose to publicize it after a year of soul searching!) was a complete non-apology, and then you clearly want to criticize her but…
Yes, it was a full game, and she absolutely deserved it. It was her third code violation in the match. First was for coaching (which, maybe, but don’t do it again), second was for smashing a racket (single point), which is automatic, third was for calling the referee a thief and a liar, which is something maybe teenage…
Hey, Naomi! It’s Serena Williams. As I said on the court, I am so proud of you and I am truly sorry. I thought I was doing the right thing in sticking up for myself. But I had no idea the media would pit us against each other.
Thank you. It still irks me how much the DS writers carried water for her after this incident. She has these melt downs every time she loses. This wasn’t some one off incident of everyone being prejudiced against her. Ffs she threatened to kill a line judge on that exact same court.
I now consider this matter 95% closed. This is as much of an apology as we can expect from a superb athlete and spoiled habitual champion as Serena.
I don’t think she did though....she is still not accepting responsibility.
Pass. I can see she is still taking no responsibility and just trying to pass the buck. She was in the wrong and no amount of race blaming with change that hard and simple truth. Until she realizes that she will not find the peace she is looking for. Maybe someday she will realize blaming others for how you act is not…
“Not only was a game taken from me but a defining, triumphant moment was taken from another player”
Osaka has to take some pride in knowing that she crushed Serena in a grand slam final to the point that Serena flipped her shit on her racket and the ump. Then she felt so bad that she sent an apology letter.
I’m not sure being a bad loser covers it when you make threats against the officials when you don’t like their calls.
Her blaming the media is pretty funny.
Same. She can be considered the greatest player of all time (definitely is for me), esp. considering the ugly levels of racism she’s certainly faced along the way, *and* have some truly dickbag, heelish moments like threatening line umps with tennis ball suffocation and stealing Osaka’s limelight with pissy temper…
She’s always been a shitty person.
Glad to see her apology consists of blaming the media.
I’m pretty much in the bag for Serena Williams as a rule. She’s been one of my favorite athletes for 20 years. That being said, she isn’t and has never been a good loser and that day certainly wasn’t one of her finer moments. She embarrassed herself and basically ruined Naomi Osaka’s moment.
