There’s been this portrayal of autism in the past decades as a fate worse than death. That autistic people have no soul or consciousness. The fact that many (but obviously not all) autistic people are capable of living relatively normal lives doesn’t seem to have registered with certain people. 

I think the main reason is the fear of autism (because it’s a fate worse than death, right?) but I wonder if that’s related to what you said. Parents so badly want their kids to be perfect and special, and an autistic kid is “defective”. You can’t brag about your kid like the other parents.

I think it’s more like the media in general is confounded by science.
