I suspect Audi was worried the 1st gen looked too much like a Beetle and was thought of as “girly.” They made it look a little more aggressive and it lost its charm. Also the baseball stitching didn’t age well.

I owned a Scion iA, after Toyota killed off Scion it was sold as a Yaris iA. It was a Mazda 2 with a much uglier front fascia.
