That’s a good question. I think most of the answer is that the Prius is cheap because it has to be. The hybrid Corolla (and Camry) get the same mpg as the Prius now. Ford doesn’t have to price the Maverick as cheaply as a Prius. It only has to be as cheap as a Ridgeline or Santa Cruz. I also think Ford is taxing…

I think the Mazda3 hatchback is a premium vehicle. VW is the only other company that’s trying to make a nice small hatchback, and the Mark 8 GTI feels like a scam. The larger the Mazda, the less premium it seems. Expectations are higher and the plastic wheel-well cladding looks cheap. I wish Mazda well, I like plucky…
