That retroactively made his whole character okay for me. He felt kind of like a relic from the standard type of superhero movie that Logan was subverting in a lot of ways. And then when he dies so suddenly, you're like "Of course this older incarnation of Logan wouldn't let him finish." Good stuff.

Yeah, I thought it was a bit silly to assume that that scene was a flashback. Didn't they even include a little ominous music cue when it cut to that reverse shot showing the strangers? Nothing they said really warranted that kind of set-up, so it seems safe to figure that their being there was the shocker. Especially
