Honestly, I think the bigger issues are pretty simple:

1) Tesla, while telling drivers that they need to remain alert and attentive, is using terminology here (Autopilot) that actually suggests to customers that it is more capable than it really is. They really should have chosen a more appropriate name, such as

It’s Tesla’s fault, but not because their system is designed poorly.

My point is more specific: It’s not clear to me that Tesla’s beta release of Autopilot was ethical.

The plane isn’t flying itself, there are 2 pilots who are monitoring everything the autopilot is doing and are ready to override it at a moment’s notice. They do not trust it at all and are trained not to.

Well said

Your points are valid but it regulation won’t be coming because of an effort to correct TM’s failings.

Tesla Motors looking in from the outside does some things wrong or doesn’t do them at all. I don’t know who they are hiring but they keep having huge glaring holes where if they are hiring experienced people, people

Whenever I see a truck with, like, an 8"+ lift, I always wonder how that’s road legal. If I rear-ended a truck like that, my Fiesta and I would be FUCKED.

I wish i could give this more stars.

Yes, they can account for it. And they should.

Oris it also a fault of the manufacturer who repeatedly touts this feature all while hiding behind the “but it’s a beta product” mentality?

People need to stop allowing this “it’s a beta feature that needs more testing” mentality in production items.

Agreed. Trucks sometime shave to be dicks. Not necessarily cutting cars off, but sometimes you need to just force your way out when there is enough room for traffic to safely stop or you will literally NEVER be able to move.

Pray on his own time. Hands on the wheel!

“ think, after these wrecks, Tesla should temporarily disable Autopilot until they have a system in place that insures that no object can impact the windshield area undetected. This could just be a software update, or it could require an upper radar unit, or perhaps the new camera setup will help.”

Jason, this is a fantastic analysis of Tesla’s autopilot shortcomings, but I’d argue that it’s missing the point. I’ve been beating this drum at every opportunity (basically every time I see a Jalopnik post wherein you guys drive around in a Model S doing everything but driving). The public’s perception of Telsa’s

The blind spot is the driver.

Don’t forget to pray when using Autopilot.

You don’t say that the prosecution team— the one that so horribly mishandled their case that it is taught in law schools around the state now— is coming out to say that they were right and remind you that Michael Jackson was an adult man who had sex. Gross, Jezebel.

In their report, authorities described photos of children bleeding, in pain and tormented.
