You can pretty much play it like a single player game. And this is my experience from before the changes. Haven’t played the game since it initially came out, and even back then I was able to finish the storyline for the characters solo. So I would imagine that that principle applies even more now.

Good. I hope every dev ends up doing things like this. Purchase the game. Plain and simple. If you pirate it to see if it's good and decide to buy it, then no harm done.
