SL is Super Low. Think of it as a gear even shorter than first.

Technically, it’s a 5-speed with an extra ultra low crawling gear, just like most offroaders (or the Porsche 959). The contemporary Alfa Romeo 164 Q4, for example, had a proper Getrag 6-speed manual. Alfa Romeo was also the first to offer a six speed in a production car, way back in 1967, with the 33 Stradale.
