We do seem to be hardwired for unrealistic hopefulness. i recently read about a study showing that clinically depressed people were significantly better at prediction and evaluation of pros and cons. So it seems that the people who see the world most accurately want to kill themselves.

The cadences of Scandinavian languages SOUND cheerful to my ears. I wonder if that influences people subconsciously, the same way that the anguished voices from my GFs TV dramas tank my mood even though I'm in the next room, can't hear what they're saying, and know it's just TV.
