I grew up in a town in Oregon in the 80's, with 35,000 people. There was literally one african american person in my high school. People weren’t overtly particularly racist. But having zero african american people in your town is never, ever, an accident.

I think it is possible to have been exposed to the history of anti-black racism, be like “aw man that’s awful,” but not make any connection to anyone else.
