That happened to me once...a big, mean white man beat me up over a parking place. I’m glad I didn’t have a gun because it wasn’t worth anyone dying over.

I can deal with pissed-off Black people. They’ve got a right to be pissed off.

They’ve still got room to learn and change, but learning and changing next year doesn’t mean this year didn’t happen.

If she hadn’t been carrying a gun, she wouldn’t have reached for a gun to solve a dispute. Guns don’t make anything better, they make people’s bad moments worse.

You’re assuming that they think what they’re saying is wrong. They’re telling you who they are and what they believe. Don’t try to analyze them, just take them at their word.

More importantly, it keeps “living while Black” in front of white people’s faces. You don’t want us hitting the snooze button and going back to sleep for another decade.

It’s easy to tell yourself you’d have righted some historic wrong if only you’d been around back then while doing nothing in your own time; You’ll never find a white person who wouldn’t have freed his slaves if he’d been born into a slave-holding family. It’s easy to be a noble ally, a great white hero in an imaginary…
