So if I remember correctly, in the 90s, they did a study in california with a similar idea. They utilized magnets in the road and oriented the polarity such that you can read N as 1 and S as 0 or whatever. Using these magnets implanted in the roads, they could interpret the grade, bank, and curve of the road.
