The Liberia analogy is inapposite. Immigration to the United States or the resettlement of refugees is about moving to countries that offer a much greater likelihood of better living conditions. Liberia was a colonial boondoggle established by the United States and motivated in part by racism and apathy.

Having empathy for other people, and the chosen remedy motivated by that empathy are two different things. One can have empathy for Latin American migrants or Syrian refugees - i.e., imagining being faced with such grave circumstances that fleeing the only home you’ve ever known for a possibly only marginally better
