At my workplace, where I’m doing entry level work (I’ve been in the workforce for most of my twenties, though), we’re getting a raise from $11.25 to $13.60. This is due, in large part, to the fact that many similar businesses pay at least that much and other businesses, like Target, are giving $12.00 at entry level.

Tipping is also an integral part of harassment against workers - overwhelmingly women - in the service industry. “I give you free money, so therefore I own a piece of you”. Patrons know they can get away with it, because waitresses need their tips to pay the rent.

I’m a former police officer, and when the cops showed up, and it became clear that he was, indeed, a paying guest of the hotel, they should have apologized to the guest for the trouble, and read the "guards" the riot act for calling them without confirming that he was actually doing what they accused him of. …

Just chiming in here to say that I don’t think the Aziz Ansari story is a grey area either—maybe not criminal, but he did not have enthusiastic consent.
