Don't know if you're referring to something else, but this particular guy has videos and photos of him doing similar shit to white women in the US, Australia, and Europe (#chokinggirlsaroundtheworld). Certainly he is racist: he's emphasizing his white privilege and taking advantage of perceived Japanese social norms

I have never forgotten about "Dogs are like retarded children," which happened way back on Politically Incorrect. I'm still stunned by it.

It's fine to simply NOT KNOW the heritage of an Asian-looking person just by looking at them, but that doesn't give the go-ahead to assume an East Asian person is "Chinese."

I will never cease to be amazed by people who ARGUE with you about who you are.

I'd be more likely to take the "drunk" factor into consideration if this kind of thing didn't happen all the damn time to people of color dealing with perfectly sober individuals - see the featured conversation for some anecdotes.

Eh, I still don't think it's that impressive for an elite to be aware of a Nobel Prize winner who has had a lot of media attention. If anything, she stands out because she is a very young woman of color. I don't think it's apt to give him a total pass based on his perceived demographic, and I don't think lowered

I don't see what's so remarkable about it - she just won the Nobel Peace Prize and has been in international headlines. This was a VIP party at the New Yorker festival, so this isn't someone's grandfather in Iowa - I'd bet this dude passes as well-educated and cosmopolitan, and still confused Malala with someone who

Well, according to this article, the Broadcasting Standards Commissions responded to the complaints by ruling that "chinky" wasn't racist if it was used with regard to food. Good to hear it's considered less acceptable these days, though.

Isn't it somewhat common over there to call Chinese takeout/takeaway a "chinky"?

Honestly, most of those names look completely made up to me. "Hao Hello"? And isn't Guang Zhou (which appears twice) a province in China?

"So sad" that they couldn't believe someone would compliment their eyes? Do I detect pity there? Maybe they were suspicious because when non-Asian strangers approach Asians to comment on their eyes, 99% of the time it's to MOCK them. You should never have let your kid badger you into bothering those people.

I could discuss the "self hate" and "white worship" aspects of this discussion, but I'll just say that the "de-ethnicization" of ethnic features, although that often appears to be the effect of these surgeries, is in most cases not a conscious "motive." It's a side effect of global beauty norms that have been impacted

What is so wrong with recognizing and adhering to and being proud of your phenotypic average?

You're not getting my point. At all.

We don't disagree about the pervasiveness and global normativity of the Western European perspective. I'm just saying, a more reasonable argument for East Asians to reject surgery and the white-influenced ideals that have emerged in their cultures is that they should find beauty in their more common ethnic features

I don't understand why you think it is a compelling point to tell East Asians, "Well, to us, your slanty eyes are what make you Asian, so it's just weird to us if you go changing that." Or, "When we mimic you, we squint our eyes, that's our shorthand for who you are." Why do you think any East Asian would care about

I had the exact same observations going over those links, but I didn't want to go through the hassle of responding to him. I hope his girlfriend's PhD draws upon more credible sources than blog posts and op-ed pieces (which are basically creative writing).

I am pretty sure that a "flattened," "broadened" face is not considered ideally attractive in Korea. It's not a coveted look.
