It’s in no way bullying, unless we just choose words and assign whatever meaning we want to them now. The writer offered, lost, and was taken up on his offer. I’d put good money on York absolutely knowing he was sticking it to Kawakami. This is a writer in York’s backyard that has most likely talked a LOT of shit

I think Kawakami is spinning it to try and make York look dumb and stick it back to him because he’s pissed about having to pay that bill. He’s trying to come across as the bigger man here. Jed probably gives zero f***s about the moral higher-ground in the situation. I’m sure he’s sick of Kawakami dumping on him

Yeah, I don’t understand what he’s complaining about. He made the bet (apropos of nothing, so far as I can tell), allowed York to change the terms of the bet after winning, then went and honored his commitment (presumably without complaining to York).

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Don’t go to the god damn French Laundry. Reservations there are months out. York probably had to have AMEX concierge call for him and the group for a short notice table. Say, “I’ll see you boys at Hooters” and be done with it.

This is an important point. From the headline, I thought York invited some beat writer to dinner and then bailed before the check arrived. Within context - yeah, it’s just Kawakami being a “look at me” asshole again.

That, and the fact that he bet lunch in Napa.

Yeah, this is important. Once in a while Kawakami gets brought up around these parts without the necessary footnote of “this guy is a smug asshole who injects himself into every story.”

Never forget that Tim Kawakami is also terrible.
