Totally agree. From the trailers, I had the same fear that the movie was just going to be a standard rom-com with Asians plopped in instead of white people, so I understand where Lauren is coming from. But it absolutely was not that. It was a movie that only makes sense with an Asian cast, where the conflicts these cha

Totally agree. I told my bff that I wish I could see it again for the first time. I don’t think it’s any kind of placeholder rom com - it’s unique and beautiful and more deep than I thought it would be going into it.  I thought it would be fluffy and light and follow a pretty standard rom com formula, but it wasn’t

I think that’s what’s so exciting - it isn’t just a British or American rom com that happens to feature Asian actors, it’s referencing particularly Asian experiences without obsessively worrying that white audiences ‘won’t get it’.

I haven’t seen the film, but while it was widely praised, it seems to me the only “new and different” aspect of Crazy Rich Asians was its willingness to cast an entire movie with characters of Asian descent

Wait, you mean having pineapple on pizza, or the debate about it?

I have only heard Black people described as “articulate” my entire life. I don’t have to see the person to know they’re Black; I just have to hear a white person complimenting them that way and I know. 100% success.

Right. Being outraged about the atrocities committed by an “other” is easy, safe and comfortable. Ditto being outraged about things that allows you to condemn other people without having to examine your own complicity in the thing you’re decrying. It’s not a coincidence that Westerners care a whole lot about the

I’m well aware of raising and slaughter practices in China, thanks. The fact that it’s unbelievably horrible there really doesn’t change the fact that suggesting animals slaughtered in America are treated humanely is, to put it in your terms, absolutely laughable.

They treat them about as humanely as some American facilities. Probably similar situations in many other countries. I don’t like that part, but the act of eating the meat itself is fine. It would be great if the whole world improved in this aspect, perhaps someday in the near future. Today though, I don’t see much

Sam Lucas’s message to Candace Owens is absolutely worth mentioning here.

There are plenty of people who come out of innaproriate and gross relationships. Sorry your dad liked dicking around with teenagers and apparently wasn’t mature enough to talk to women his own age. That doesn’t mean it’s not weird and gross in modern times. Grown men should not be dating teens, particularly in 2018.

(((I know lots of couples like this. One of my classmates was 17 and dating a 26 year old. She even took him to our Catholic school prom.)))

To be clear: We are not just talking about a bit older here, and most states have laws for “Romeo and Juliet” cases - where one of the parties is 19 and the other 17, or similar age differences. We are talking about a case where your father is old enough to be your mother’s father. And she was below the age of consent

17 and 37. 17 and 37.  😒

Uh no.

Well, then, with all the wisdom that you have, please - volunteer your knowledge and know-how at a women’s shelter!

Yes, of course ...

But isn’t the real problem the fact that we’ve become a society willing to crucify people over a few old tweets?
