You aren’t going to get rid of racism by getting rid of one symbol. Racism in the south is entrenched and, in many ways, encouraged by the leaders there. They’ll just find another symbol, and this one will start creeping back in when the heat dies down. If you really want to save lives, work on reining in guns.

That’s not how I read that quote. It sounds to me as if he (or his mother) is saying that if something scary is happening, there are people out there helping it to happen. He should have been clearer.
