The NavyTimes article had a little more info from the actual pilot as well - he was cleared of any wrongdoing in the initial reports, but the followup reports spread the blame all over the place, including the RTFM protocols...

I mean, this is probably the result of a failure in training or doctrine. They don’t let dummies fly planes (Italian skilifts not withstanding), so this pilot probably believed to the best of his knowledge that bailing out was the correct thing to do.
