When the Metroid on the NES came out, Aliens had come out the year before. Playing Metroid helped to convey the isolation of the protagonist in exploring the planet in a similar manner to that movie.

My old TV (Sony KDL52XBR4) had this disabled by default if I remember correctly. However my new LG did not. As soon as my wife saw it she said “I hate it!!! Why does it look like that!!!”... so I turned it off and she was like “OMG! that is so much better!!!!! I was gonna have you return it!”
Why do TV manufacturers still insist on adding that garbage “motion smoothing” option to their sets, or even worse, turn it on by default? I don’t know anyone who uses it, and if they do it’s because they don’t know any better.
