That is kinda my point. The OP was commenting on how expensive it is to repair a BMW engine. The estimate to change the timing chain cover was over $5K. That alone totaled the car. I think that is excessive. 

Some states have laws that if you turn on your wipers, you must turn on the lights. So some people don’t turn on the wipers, or at least wait until it is raining really hard before turning them on. 

To be fair, it is because the insurance company said they had to use BMW to do the replacement, and BMW estimated 30 hrs for the job. The labor alone was going to be $4K+. Which was due to the design of the engine, of course. I still think it would have been worth fixing if we found someone to do the job for less. 

I saw an 8 year old 328i declared a total loss because the timing chain cover was cracked in an accident. The cost to repair the sheet metal wasn’t bad and no airbags went off. The cost to replace the timing chain cover was more than the car was worth!!!

Honestly, no. I think my situation is unique, though. We bought it CPO when it had been used for one year. Within 6 months of buying it, the engine had to be rebuilt twice; once for a known issue concerning the wrist pins on the pistons (for which there was a service bulletin about specifying the VINs affected), then…

I feel like a lot of companies are doing weird things to try to boost the side impact scores. The windows in particular are getting smaller and smaller. The C300 looks good, but since we have been doing more drive thoughts during COVID it has become apparent the windows are just awkward to use in a drive through ATM…

Probably has more to do with the crazy hp and torque numbers they are promising. They may need more studs to put that power down, especially if towing.
