I think a big reason is at a certain age we no longer listen to the radio or watch MTV type television so we are not aware of current music. I myself have discovered new bands when their songs have been played on commercials or movie soundtracks.

How about John Fogerty's "Fortunate Son" seemingly being the song that defines the Vietnam War.  Whenever I hear the first chords of the song I expect to see helicopters flying over the jungles.
